read | splurge or save?

a few days ago, i was contacted by jessica brady of Raise.com about a post they made on splurging vs saving and she asked for my take on the topic. you can read their post here 🙂

i’ve always been that kind of person who lived by the motto, “free is always better,” and most days i still do. i enter competitions to win stuff, particularly for those which i probably wouldn’t have paid for anyway; free food always tastes better (even if it’s just your parents paying); free tickets = funner events, and so it goes. but unfortunately, that rule of thumb doesn’t apply to fashion, because in fashion, there’s another rule i live by: “is it quality or trendy?”, which leads me to the title of this post – splurge or save? sometimes we all get caught up in the bright lights of fancy, foreign brands, but when is the price tag really worth it? and for what items?

outfit | opposite of adults

‘opposite of adults’, alternatively titled, ‘the security guard thought i was too fat to be on a seesaw’.

my polaroid camera was a birthday gift and it is my world ♥

you know, since i recently turned eighteen, i haven’t actually felt that different. sure, i can vote, drink, drive (when i get my ish together), gamble, get married, get my own gym membership, my own savings account, blahblahblahblahblah, and sure, some of those things are daunting, but other than that, i’ve been very calm about this whole aging process.

tomboy for a day

for anyone who has been reading dearsolo for a while, you’ll know how much i love my topshop mom jeans -i even dedicated an entire blog post to them when i bought them last june. but some time after that, i’m not sure if i lost weight (ha!) or if they expanded, but suddenly, i had to belt them every time i wore them, which i never had to do before, and it was a massive pain in the bum. then, in a completely different train of thought, i became like super obsessed with boyfriend jeans and i craved a pair. so what do i do with some baggy mom jeans and a lust for boyfriend jeans? introduce my boyfriend to my mom and get this uber tomboy-ish vibe.

The Last Sunday Of August

The Last Sunday Of August

It’s so strange to think about how five minutes ago is was 2010 and now there’s four months left of 2013. I read an interesting explanation about why time is moving so fast: it’s because of our frame of reference. When we were five years old, a year felt like a century because we had only had five of them. So as our number of years increases, the fraction of our lives that it is decreases, so a year is still a year, it just feels shorter because we’ve had less of them. Trippy, right? 2013’s also kind of like that C.S. Lewis quote: “Isn’t it funny how day by day, nothing changes, but when you look back, everything is different.

But moving on.

I had time before I went to church this morning so I thought why not take some outfit photos? My jacket is from Cotton On, my tank top is from Mr Price, my shoes are from Topshop, the make-shift turban is a scarf from Pick ‘n Pay and the skirt was a gift from my mom (I’m thinking of doing a DIY on skater skirts – they’re relatively basic, I just need to find the time).

This upcoming week is so busy, so I’ll blog when I blog. Lol.

I’ll Wear Your Mother’s Jeans

I’ll Wear Your Mother’s Jeans

Please take my corny punny title as an apology for my lack of blog posts this week. I have inspiration, I just haven’t felt like writing posts. Seems like I blogged more during my exams, but I’ll try to be better – promise!

On Friday the 28th of June, I went to Sandton City to indulge in my favourite time of year – sale season. A lot of the pieces in my outfit were actually bought on the day, except the necklace, which is my moms from a market and the denim shirt which was bought last year from Mr Price (which now delivers worldwide, by the way!).

Here is the low down on the new items:

  • My Chic Happens sweatshirt from Mr Price which is part of another beloved South African blogger’s (The Quirky Stylista) fashion range for Mr Price. It’s cute, simple and actually really warm!
  • These amazing Topshop Mom Jeans (hence the blog post’s title, teehee) which surprisingly weren’t on sale but I caved and bought them anyway because I’ve been searching for a nice pair of high-waisted/mom jeans for years and I really liked their fit!
  • Creepers from Woolworths – I was beyond surprised to find them there of all places (and on sale, too!). When I went to Topshop that day, I was shocked that I didn’t find any there, or at Cotton On either, so when I saw them at Woolworths, I was so excited that I bought them in a heartbeat. A lot of people have reservations about them, and I must admit, I didn’t like them at first either, but when I saw the different heights of them and the different ways you can style them, I realised that one inch isn’t that bad and they are actually very easy to walk in, contrary to popular belief! But I’m not quite ready for Jeffrey Campbells like this and I don’t think I ever will be, lol.
I also changed my hair, and even though it’s only temporary before I redo my braids, I thought why not do a look post with it!
