Hello, and welcome back to The DearSolo Blog! I would apologise for the two week vacation, but I’m preeeeetty sure I warned you in my last post that due to the big move, the blog will be last on my list of priorities, and I regret absolutely nothing! Cape Town is amazing.

There’s nothing quite like being in a new city, in a new living space and essentially being a grown woman. I’m so grateful to already have friends and family here in CT, because it’s always nice to know people, and it’s so cool that my friend Nicole (who’s also in my res, yay!) is also a blogger, so she was more than helpful when it came to shooting this post.

Now that O-Week is over and lectures have officially started, I feel like I can impart some knowledge from my first two weeks at UCT, so that if anyone is thinking of coming down next year (which you should), they’ll know a few things more than I did:

  • Ikeys Vibe people are like Jehovah’s Witnesses. They are incredibly persistent, but try to say no! I didn’t, so now I’ll be visiting Cotton On every week and attending every rugby game to make it feel worth it, ha!
  • Participate! Say ‘yes’ to life! Try to go to as many O-Week events and things as you can. You’re a fresher, make the most of it! But also…
  • Don’t sign up for every club that will give you a free coke or slush puppy. Seriously, learn from my mistakes.
  • Boys have cooties. Avoid them – your girls are all you need! ๐Ÿ˜‰ (only slightly joking)
  • Vitamin C, Vitamin C, Vitamin C!!! You may want to go out every night – and by all means, go for it! – but your body might not like it. Stock up on Med Lemon, Strepsils, nasal spray, and anything you need to keep you going.
  • McDonalds willย alwaysย stay winning.
  • Let textbooks be the last thing you buy, because I am officially home-ridden. That SMS from the bank has never been so sore ๐Ÿ™
  • But most importantly – like the blog title says –ย know yourself. It’s all fun and good to go out, but if you’re not the type of person who enjoys that, then don’t! Don’t feel pressurised into doing anything you don’t want to do, and if you do feel like you are, find like minded people who understand that. University is so huge – there is literally someone for everyone. It’s amazing to have friends based on common interests other than going to the same school! Stretch out of your comfort zone and try new things, but at the same time, stay true to who you are and your morals and values. You’ll thank yourself for it later!

It’s been so cool to meet people who follow me on Twitter/Instagram/this blog, so if you ever see me on campus (despite the moody face), say hi! Making friends is cool. If you have your own O-Week survival tips, post em! I feel like I definitely missed out on a lot, so let me know the things you’ve learnt.

Fun Fact: this blog title was actually inspired by Drake because I’ve been Draking all afternoon and once again, I regret absolutely nothing.
