To paraphrase the Notorious B.I.G., if you didn’t know about Tony Gum, now you know. A visual artist, creative, the mind behind Tony Gum and half of The Local Collective – she’s basically an all round cool person, and she’s been doing some cool things lately.
Black Coca-Cola: A woman derived from the 60’s, as well as an African woman merged into one to create an image of Black Coca-Cola lady. An image relatable to every Mom, Pink and Larry.
What I particularly love about this photo series is the art direction. You get the modern/Western-in-an-African-context Coca-Cola lady, the big-momma Coca-Cola lady and the Xhosa Coca Cola lady – three women who represent some of the diversity in being an African woman. Besides, the contrast of the green and red stays being a winning combination.
Now to echo the original plea: Coca-Cola, get yourself together and organise a collaboration! The release of these images has captivated me so much, I want to hunt down all the glass bottle cokes in the world and I don’t even drink coke. Tony is heaven in a hand basket 🙂
